During June-August, 2018, Allan Stypeck, Senior Member American Society of Appraisers, physically inspected the music archive and related material belonging to John Snyder, Henry Clay Avenue, Neo Orleans, Louisiana 70118. The inspection took place at 1515 Henry Clay Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana and 12160 Parklawn Drive, Rockville, Maryland. . The purpose of this appraisal is to determine an opinion of the Fair Market Value for resale. The appraisal was requested by John Snyder.
As of September 9, 2018, Mr. Stypeck has completed all inspections, research and preparations pertaining to this appraisal report as agreed upon in advance with John Snyder, thereby concluding contractual obligations. The effective date of the values appearing in this appraisal is September 9, 2018.
This appraisal report has been prepared in strict accordance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) set forth by the Appraisal Standards Board of the Appraisal Foundation, Washington, DC, and with the Principles of Appraisal Practice Code of Ethics set forth by the American Society of Appraisers, Washington, DC.
All statements or definitions of purpose, intended use, value, valuation approach, limiting conditions, liabilities and terminology of credentials are included in this document. Any changes or omissions of these or any pages of this report will automatically render the entire appraisal null and void and abrogate the appraiser’s responsibility.
The appraiser has no present or contemplated future interest, direct or indirect, in the subject material of this appraisal, or in its preparation or execution, other than the agreed upon appraiser’s fee.
To the best of our knowledge, information and belief, the opinions of value expressed in the appraisal, attached hereto, represent the Fair Market Value of the subject matter as of the effective date of September 9, 2019 to be $750,000 (Seven Hundred Fifty Thousand Dollars).

PURPOSE AND INTENDED USE
The purpose of this appraisal is to express an opinion regarding the Fair Market Value of the properties described hereinafter. This appraisal is intended to function solely in the context of said purpose. Any other use will render the entire appraisal null and void and abrogate the appraiser’s responsibility.
DEFINITION OF VALUE
The type of value expressed by this appraisal report is Fair Market Value. Fair Market Value is a concept first defined by the U. S. Internal Revenue Service and is the sole concept of value accepted by that body for assessing properties intended for sale, among its other taxation functions. It is here (and normally) understood to represent that amount of money at which a property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller in the appropriate marketplace, neither being under any compulsion to buy or sell, and both having reasonable knowledge of the relevant facts.
The approach to value employed in this appraisal to estimate Fair Market Value of the subject material is the Market Comparison Approach, also known as the Sales Comparison Method of Valuation. This is one of the three customary approaches in valuation and is the most widely used method for personal property appraisal. It involves the comparison of a subject property with properties of reasonably similar qualities that have sold during a relevant time frame in a relevant market.
LIMITING CONDITIONS AND LIABILITIES
This appraisal report, or any copies of it, may be transmitted to third parties or legal entities only in its entirety. Separation of the report, removal of pages, or changes made to any page will render the entire appraisal null and void and abrogate the appraiser’s responsibility. Improper dissemination or use for a purpose other than stated also renders the report null and void.
This appraisal has been made with the understanding that the ownership of the materials by John Snyder includes all rights that may be lawfully owned and is not subject to any encumbrances.
Neither the assignment to prepare this appraisal report nor the compensation is contingent upon the value of the property. All fees for professional services in connection to the preparation of this report have been established on a flat hourly rate for professional time and are not based upon a percentage of property value.
Liability if any, for any material inaccuracies in this report is strictly limited to the amount of compensation paid for this appraisal report. In addition, the appraiser shall not be required to appear in court in connection with the subject properties unless arrangements, including professional fees, are previously made.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The following inventory of archival papers, recordings, audio/visual tapes, unproduced practice, studio and live performance tapes and related material pertaining to the career of John Snyder, Producer, Manager and Agent of multiple jazz performers, including musicians and vocalists, is being appraised for fair market value sale purposes. Inventory lists and an 88-minute DVD narrated by John Snyder physically reviewing the collection at his home in New Orleans is enclosed with the appraisal report. The entire collection has been physical reviewed by Allan Stypeck, Senior Member American Society of Appraisers. The inventory is generally in very good or better with above average sound and visual quality.
John Snyder is an internationally respected member of the jazz music community. He is highly regarded as a music attorney, music producer, artist manager and educator. John Snyder has produced over 350 recordings for national and international record companies (1975-2016) and over 400 compilations and recordings on CD (1987-1998). His productions of jazz recordings have been nominate for 32 Grammys of which 5 have won the Grammy Award. (See enclosed list)
As a personal agent, John Snyder has managed Gil Evans, Jim Hall, Art Pepper, Chet Baker and Ornette Coleman. He has produced multiple DVD’s of Bobby Short, Etta James, Bob Brookmeyer, Warren Vache, Gerry Mulligan and many other prominent members of the jazz music community. A chronological biography of John Snyder’s professional career in music is enclosed with this appraisal report.
The John Snyder archive consists of over 600 linear feet of music production archives and related material spanning the career of John Snyder from the early 1970’s to the present. The 88-minute DVD created and narrated by John Snyder provides an extensive visual review of the scope and content of the entire collection.
The collection contains the following components: (all components have inventories enclosed with the appraisal report)
- Archival papers, correspondence and production notebooks pertaining to over 250 individual performers, groups, bands and additional jazz related projects including Jazz Masterclasses. Included in the archive is a substantial file relating to Chet Baker circa 1975-1981 (The Comeback Years) The file contains material relating to Baker’s recovery from the Methadone Program he entered to recover from drug addiction, correspondence relating to issues with his drug recovery and ability to perform, work contracts and agreements and a substantial quantity of original and unpublished correspondence between Chet Baker, his mother Vera Baker, wife Carol Baker, girlfriend Ruth Young and manager John Snyder.
- Approximately 7,800 audio/visual media tapes in various formats including reel to reel tapes, cassette tapes, digital tapes, video cassettes, DVD’s, DVC’s and other miscellaneous formats. These tapes include unproduced sessions and record dates, live performances, performance documentaries, TV performances, interviews and various spontaneous filming of events relating to the sessions and performances. Much of the material has never been produced commercially.
- A collection of John Snyder’s produced recordings containing over 750 original LP recordings, CD’s and DVD’s. Approximately 200 of these recordings have various quantities of duplication in the collection
- Approximately 11,000 original photographs relating to John Snyder’s career in music including, but not restricted to, practice and recording sessions, live performances, musicians and recording crews and personal and professional friendships.
- 8292 DVD’s of 10 Jazz Masterclass Recordings (all are in various multiple quantities, see enclosed list).
- 780 cassettes of recordings produced by John Snyder for the Artist House Record label in the 1970’s (all are in various multiple quantities).
- A collection of approximately 178 signed baseballs memorializing recording sessions inscribed by the artists.
- Miscellaneous memorabilia including signed photographs and instruments from Ornette Coleman, Chet Baker,Don Cherry, James Cotton, Sugar Blue, Junior Wells, The Allman Brothers and the Derek Trucks Band.
This appraiser’s opinion of value is based on comparable prices obtained for the general recordings and CD’s from the out-of-print and used music recording marketplace, including disccog.com, amazon.com and other internet websites specializing in jazz recordings. Comparable values for the signature and historic value of the correspondence, signed baseballs and archival value of the collection was obtained from ABAA/ILAB booksellers’ specializing in music and autographs, including James Cummins Booksellers, Ken Lopez, J & J Lubrano Music Antiquarians, Schulson Autographs, and University Archives, current auction sales records obtained from American Book Prices Current and this appraiser’s forty years of experience and expertise appraising and selling similar items and collections including, but not restricted to, the following:
